Me, 30 seconds into the opening credits, after the camera pans from Kim Novak’s left eye to right: 🤩 Ok, this really is the best movie of all time.

Not sure why I gave this 3.5 stars the first four times I watched it. I guess because I didn’t think it was special enough “as a film” to warrant anything more? Anyway, watching it the fifth time feels just as exciting as the first, so I have to admit how deeply and unabashedly I love this musical, and especially this document of it. The photography and editing might not be ground-breaking, but they serve the purpose of capturing the magic of the stage production in the least intrusive—and in my view, best—way possible.

Definitive Ranking of Every Performance in Steven Spielberg’s WSS:

    1. Mike Faist (!!) as Riff
    2. David Alvarez (🔥) as Bernardo
    3. Rachel Zegler as Maria
    4. Mike Iveson as Glad Hand (one-scene wonder)
    5. Josh Andrés Rivera as Chino
    6. Rita Moreno as Valentina
    7. Ariana DeBose as Anita (beautiful voice and a great dancer, but noticeably green in the acting department — hard to shake the ghost of Rita Moreno’s screen presence when she’s… right there)
    8. Brian…

Gaga and Jared Leto are terrific, leaning hard into their caricaturizations and serving High Camp realness with every line reading, but the rest of the movie is oddly sober in its affect and plotting, drably lit, and most disappointingly, boring.

Also, unintentionally anachronistic pop music choices are a pet peeve and this soundtrack was full of them.  Having “Faith” by George Michael (1987) as Gaga and Adam Driver’s wedding song in… 1972? Really?
