    2001: A Space Odyssey

2001:A Space Odyssey is quite simply the worst thing to happen to cinema ever. Its forced profundity has caused millions of people all over the world to force themselves to like what is quite simply nothing more than an exercise in style.

Kubrick has no idea what he is doing here. His film jumps around with little to no sense of unity. The great film makers of the world create a series of events that contain clarity of information, something…

Ever since I joined Letterboxd, nothing has scared me more than the idea of trying to write about 2001: A Space Odyssey. The fact that everything has "already been said" about this masterpiece has itself already been said so many times that there's not even an original means of expressing my lack of originality left at my disposal. So with the knowledge that I will probably never be able to fully encapsulate what makes this my favorite movie of all…

    8 A.M. Sunday, 12th of January, 2014. HAL'S birthday. I'm tired as fuck.

    HAL.

    IBM.

    HAL/IBM. HAL=IBM. IBM=HAL.

    H+1 = I
    A+1 = B
    L+1 = M

So HAL is indisputably IBM. Just go one letter on in the alphabet from H, A and L and you get I, B and M.

But what is IBM? A computer company Kubrick had a grudge against? Or are we just missing a "T" in the greatest riddle known to mankind? Confused? Allow…

2001: A Space Odyssey is the 2nd-highest-rated "adventure" movie on Letterboxd. There are two ridiculous things about that sentence: 2001 being categorized as an adventure movie, and 2001 being the 2nd-highest-rated anything.

2001: A Space Odyssey was leaps and bounds ahead of its time. I almost can't believe this film was released in 1968. Honestly, my mind is blown. It's one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen. The cinematography is beyond outstanding. This movie IS sci-fi. Without 2001 sci-fi would NOT be what it is today. All science fiction movies should bow down to this film and thank Mr. Stanley Kubrick.

a singular cinematic achievement. nothing moves quite like 2001: A Space Odyssey. it has the most confident of pacing, taking its time, no concern for impatient viewers. if you're not on this thing's wavelength, you're in for one rocky ride. but thankfully, that has never been the case for me. there is not one moment during Kubrick's magnum opus where I am not entirely riveted. from the unparalleled visuals to the inspired music, 2001 is the kind of film that can't be explained. it must be experienced. cinema at its purest form.

to put it another way: this thing fucks.

I know many people use the hyperbole of "You must watch this movie in theaters!" But most of the time for me I feel like I get the same experience just watching it at home. But I mean it when I say that seeing 2001: A Space Odyssey made me finally fall in love with this monolith of a movie. You must watch this movie in theaters to fully experience the movie. Seeing it on the big screen is unlike anything I've ever seen. Truly the experience of a lifetime.

I finally saw this film at the best possible way, at the cinema!

I was for seeing this great piece of cinema very acclaimed by all for so long and as soon as I knew that I could have the opportunity to watch it on the big screen, it was the perfect occasion to see it.

2001: A Space Odyssey is a very complex and metaphoric work, full of great symbolisms about the humanity. Such an admirable work from the fantastic genious that Stanley Kubrick was.

Simply put, 2001: A Space Odyssey is one of cinema's greatest achievements from one of its greatest masters. Happy 25th birthday, HAL.

I think what makes our birthday boy such a perfect villain (or tragic hero if you want to call him that) is the dichotomy between him and everything else in the film. The sets, characters, direction, pacing, etc. is very cold and emotionless, but HAL is filled with emotion. Confidence, hubris, fear, regret, longing, remorse. This juxtaposition really makes him stand out.

That's not to say the rest of 2001: A Space Odyssey isn't terrific, because it is, but today belongs to HAL 9000.

    I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that.

One of the greatest film achievements of all time, 2001: A Space Odyssey, is one of the most beautiful, spectacular, visually magnificent and poetic films ever made. Re-watching this made me realize how much this film really means, and how it visually represents evolution and time. LOVE this movie!
