This unlocked the film for me: "Hiroshima is a circular film. At the end of the last reel you can easily move back to the first, and so on. Hiroshima is a parenthesis in time."

    Hiroshima Mon Amour

We remember, we forget. We love, we forget. We hurt, we remember. We love, we hurt. Love is fleeting, pain lingers on. We survive, we forget.

But there will always be Nevers, there will always be Hiroshima.

Lui: You saw nothing in Hiroshima. Nothing.

    Elle: I saw everything. Everything.

If there was a film that could leave you speechless but wanting to say so many things about it, Hiroshima Mon Amour would be that film.

The first twenty or so minutes were fantastic and promising, but I just did not care for the two main characters at all. Ninety minutes felt like three hours of dull, sometimes poetic dialogue and not much else. Not a fan.

    Hiroshima Mon Amour

Shocked to find out that the pretentiousness that Hiroshima Mon Amour kind of foreshadows with its beautiful title (it is the title, poster and short runtime that impulsively persuaded me to watch this tonight) actually extends throughout the whole damn film; the tiresome opening sequence as an exasperating warm-up.

Elle: “I have always wept for the fate of Hiroshima. Always.”
Lui: “No. What would you have wept about?”

    Urgh.

I am not keen on calling films pretentious, but that is…

Hiroshima Mon Amour is both a great film and some of the most pretentious clap trap I've ever seen.
It is as much a beautiful ode to overcoming the despair of utter destruction as it is a terribly misguided self-important comparison between the main character's lost love and the world's most horrific disaster.
It is beautifully photographed and scored, and so melodramatic at times that it is laugh out loud funny.
It's poetic dialogue sings, but the dreariness is too…

Hiroshima Mon Amour wields numerous styles, stories, techniques and elements that combined make for an arrestingly thought-provoking film that has the panache which allow it to still feel perspicacious nearly 60 years later.

Films about memory, loss, time, oblivion and reminiscence have always hit me really hard, but rarely have I seen it done as effectively than with Alain Resnais' beautifully poetic and lyrically ambiguous Hiroshima Mon Amour; Audaciously told, this is an evocative and innovative masterpiece of elegant romance,…

Much more affecting and rewarding than Night and Fog but not as enthralling as Last Year at Marienbad. Resnais sure knows how to direct a good-looking picture, albeit I'm not 100% sure that this love story mashes well with a 'Hiroshima bombing' documentary. But it's beautiful and ugly and kinda leaves you depressed by the end, like the best of things.

"The temperature of the sun in Peace Square."

a nightmarish half forgotten memory. one of the most impeccably directed films i've ever seen, and that prologue is some of the best 15 minutes ever committed to celluloid. Godard was playful, Truffaut was insightful, but Resnais manages to be both while also being brutal. french new wave never fails to surprise me.

Le montage des 15 premières minutes est l'une des plus belles choses que j'ai vues au cinéma. Un mélange d'horreur et d'amour, avec ce texte sublime.

Caught this one on the big screen.

Afterwards, the audience were dumbstruck, sitting silently for a good 60 seconds before we all got up to leave. Strangely, the only other time I recall that happening was at the end of Zero Dark Thirty.

On a lighter note: I felt weird munching popcorn as images of broken bodies and a destroyed city flashed across the screen in the early moments.
