I can't do it. I want to look at How Green Was My Valley and judge it on what it does well and what it does poorly. I want to be able to say its narrative is weak and that it comes off flat and almost boring. I want to say that it doesn't push any boundaries in the way that it tells it's story and it's because…

When Ford is 'on,' he can make me participate in ideas and sentiments I'd usually reject with a certain amount of distrust. He's gloriously 'on' for about 2/3 of this movie, but it's too long, it's anecdotal and digressive and there are parts in the middle that even he couldn't make me care about.

Was so lucky to discuss this with Kristin Thompson, who wrote probably one of the best pieces on the film's historiography in relation to a certain you-know-who, and have her discuss some of the formal and narrative strategies at play in Ford's melodramatic masterpiece. Watching this a second time really revealed how odd the choices can be: clashing genre-transitions, eschewing classical suspense sequences, painting shadows on the ceiling. As Kristin points out, trying to teach this as a coherent text feels rather daunting. Sometimes, you just gotta feel it. Listen to the show here.

The man was once a boy, a young Welsh lad who seemed like he could go anywhere in life. But as he went through life's hardships, as we all do, he discovered his choices were rather limited; he went to school, but that did him no good. (He got beat up; both by bullies and by teachers.) He worked in the coal mines, but that just brought him more misery. (His brain was rotting away.) He was a dedicated supporter…

What am I supposed to say here? I know for many cinephiles John Ford is closer to god than man ("one might spend a lifetime contemplating The Searchers or Wagon Master or Young Mr. Lincoln (39) and continually find new values, problems, and layers of feeling" — Kent Jones) , but it was impossible for me to watch this without getting extremely frustrated by the lumpy, one-damn-thing-after-another narrative of what's clearly a massive book (651 pages!) funneled into a rush…

As a Welshman, indeed a welsh former history teacher, this is quite a strange one to review. I'd seen it years ago, in school, in a history class where the teacher mocked the Irish accents and constant singing and the many problems inherent in using this movie to generate an image of Wales and the working class. And that stuck with me.

And those issues are undoubtedly there. But they don't matter, the framing device of a nostalgic narrator almost…

"It makes me think of so much that is good, that is gone." ~ Huw Morgan

What an impressive film! It contains just about everything you might look for in great cinema, from romance and humor and drama, politics and religion, to superb cinematography, great acting, a dynamite soundtrack and masterful directing, editing and art. This winner of five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, stands as a testament to the unparalleled directing skills of John Ford and the irrepressible production…

Am I the Only One Still Doing This?

Well I guess I’ll never know the answer to that question since this is in black and white. I should’ve checked to see how many other reviews used that same terrible joke, I’m guessing a lot. So this is John Ford week for FSDO and once again, I have chosen to be difficult. Ford is mainly known for being the godfather of the Western genre and for his many collaborations with John…

What can we make of those stunning moments of revelation in which the innermost fundamental operative modes of others finally make sense? This question is rhetorical (of course) and not one I intend to answer in the following review; though I believe that Ford's ideologies and cinematic sensibility have now clicked into place for me in an effective manner.

How Green Was My Valley is a film of solipsistic ideologies - not just the belief one has of others in…

Memory... Strange that the mind will forget so much of what only this moment has passed, and yet hold clear and bright the memory of what happened years ago; of men and women long since dead.
    -Huw Morgan

As Frasier Crane said, "It is a beautifully acted depiction of life in a small town in Wales. It won five Academy Awards! It's a classic!" True on all counts, but it's also a type of film that can't be made anymore…

    ...So wow.

Maybe I do need to be a little more discerning with my grades in general (this is my third 10 this month) because how often do you walk out of a film in which you 1) cry multiple times at the most subtle of gestures and most expressive of compositions and 2) decide that you need to reconsider who you call your favorite director.

On the surface, Ford is your granddaddy's favorite director: heavy, a bit slow, perhaps…
