A proud vintage calibre this one. Thirty years have passed since it was fully relevant. And thirty years have passed since I first made acquaintance with Near Dark. But by fuck – it’s still cool!

As much as I’m hailing this – Near Dark shouldn’t appeal to younger folks, I suppose. Nor should it appeal to those who love to constantly complain about the lack of blood and gore. But for the rest of us – well, we all know it’s legendary stuff. And the great thing about classics like this – they don't age. We do, but they don't!

Ashamed to now notice that when I originally logged Near Dark on Letterboxd (here) I made no mention of the Aliens reunion (Lance Henriksen, Bill Paxton and Jenette Goldstein) that takes place in this movie. It's magnified by the fact that it's the first time I notice that Aliens is playing in a theater across the street while Adrian Pasdar is strolling by.

If you've never seen Near Dark check it out. You've never seen Henriksen or Paxton better. Especially Paxton.

Bill Paxton's completely unhinged high voltage energy and unpredictability, elevate what's otherwise an above average vampire melodrama, to a level that makes this a somewhat unique entry into the subgenre. And to that, I'd be remiss to not mention the most exceptional part of Near Dark. A moment that keeps clawing it's way back to the front of my mind. I'm talking about that bar scene.

    Holy moly - chilling stuff.

"You're gonna have to support your own bad habits."

Old, sentimental favorite for me, although I can tell it's been a long while since I last saw it since I had no idea that either Tangerine Dream did the score or that Tim Thomerson was in it. Dark, romantic angst melds with equally satisfying horror and action, with pretty much every actor in it giving it a lot more humanity than either genre is usually required to have. I've even matured into being able to accept the whole blood transfusion thing happily, since it kind of fits into this more realistic take on v-word mythology.

A gritty dark take on the traditional vampire tale. This is yet another case for Bill Paxton being an under rated actor. He provides both laughs and dread with his cut throat nature. We never knew what he and his gang of vamps was gonna do next. Watch the bar scene, you will see what I mean. The direction this movie takes is more emotional than action or gore and it makes the movie better. This is a must watch for drama horror fans and fans of vampire movies.

Kathryn Bigelow bursts out of the screen from the start with a solo debut of pulse-pounding authenticity and gracious romance. Its beauty is mainly mined from the familial dynamics interacting with location: how country roads seem even darker due to the presence of a lone street light, how (nearly) empty bars become ripe for slaughter, how the 'National Anthem sign-off' on television signals an ironic twist of fate. The band of vampires carry their own selective light, and so…
