Solid use of primary source interviews to illustrate the amazing legacy Bruce Lee created despite leaving this world at such a young age.

The sorrow of he artist cut before,
His final statement is written clear.
The young rascal of the spirit and core,

Lee lee lee lee lee lee lee lee lee, I’m talkin’ fuckin’ Lee. Bruce Lee’s bored look as he scares off two guards in the bad guy’s underground lair was hilarious. Fun to see him break Jackie Chan’s neck really quickly and to see him spar with a young Sammo Hung at the very beginning. Gotta get me a private island with an underground lair one of these days.

Archival footage like the clips of a 9-year-old Bruce Lee in The Kid are the real gems in this movie. I’d never seen such a young Lee before and his charm and charisma were clear even then.

Unfortunately, most of the runtime is consumed by what feels like too-intrusive and exploitative shots of private moments right after his death. Sure it’s neat to see a young Sammo Hung at Bruce’s funeral in Hong Kong but it also feels gross to…

I’ve seen and heard the Bruce Lee story since I was young.  I can almost recite the man’s life.  That’s how much of a fixture the great Bruce Lee has been in my life and pop culture since his passing in 1973.  Nevertheless, BE WATER might be the saddest and most relevant retelling of his story.

Given the political and racial strife going on in the US at the moment, it was rather interesting to see it from the perspective…

  • Game of Death

    Game of Death

Golden Harvest's Game of Death is at times quite painful to watch and not just because of the tragedy behind Bruce Lee's death. You almost have to admire the studio for attempting to create a film "starring" Bruce Lee when they only had eleven minutes of footage of the actual Bruce Lee to work with, but that admiration quickly fades when you see the techniques used to pull said feat off. Having an actor wearing big sunglasses to hide the…

Director Lee Tso-Nam takes good taste, smashes it to pieces, urinates on the rubble, balls it up, and tosses it over a thousand-foot cliff in this hilarious chopsocky that exploits the 1973 death of Bruce Lee. It opens with a martial artist named Tiger who visits Bruce Lee on a movie set, where Bruce (who has a headache) tells Tiger that if anything happens to him, Tiger is to be the new “Dragon.” Both Tiger and Bruce are played by…

Keen on mastering a technique that Bruce Lee had for killing his opponents with his fingers, a young martial artist is pursued by gangsters as he tracks down a book that Bruce Lee wrote on the subject in this Hong Kong action flick. This has a reputation as one of the better "bruceploitation" films that were made after the star's untimely death and it is certainly more palatable than the likes of The Clones of Bruce Lee since there is…
