I’m a big fan of 70’s made for TV movies of the Horror/Thriller variety and Someone’s Watching Me is no slouch, not a game changer by any means but it is fun to see Carpenter go all De Palma with the Hitchcock influences. A neat little tension yarn with some effective moments, plus Charles Cyphers and Adrienne Barbeau so naturally I’d be all in on this but I can’t help but wonder how this would have turned out without Television…

Oof, what a year Carpenter was having between this, Halloween, and the script for Laura Mars. This is as good as anything I've seen from him, though a bit more Hitchockian pastiche and less stylistically Carpenter as we'd come to know him. But dangit it works, and Leigh might just be the most badass woman in any of his movies. Does not take shit and her quirks made her feel very alive. Poor Uncle Leo, though.

Lauren Hutton is among the very best of 1970's Horror Heroines as Leigh Michaels. She is smart, funny, eccentric, completely capable, someone who it is a pleasure to follow around as she moves in, gets a job, hangs out with a co-worker (Adrienne Barbeau!!!), picks up a man, etc., until the constant pressure and stress of sustained electronic sexual harassment and surveillance begins to wear down her very person, until being treated as an object, being put into the position…

    Christian Doig

    Christian Doig ★★★

Sober and ultimately rewarding made-for-TV thriller, this slow-paced exercise in the subgenre of Rear-Window-like movies stars a watchable Lauren Hutton as a television director who, just as she moves to a penthouse in L.A., becomes the victim of some misogynist stalker guy whose terrorizing methods are intent on putting her on the verge of suicide.

Directed by John Carpenter, Someone's Watching Me! has endured the passing of time. It is a nicely crafted production, taking advantage of creativity arguably in…

I walked into "Someone's Watching Me!" with a bit of trepidation, having read some negative reviews and knowing it was a lesser known, made for TV Carpenter movie. Boy, don't I look dumb? Holy cow, what a movie that was. It's perfectly paced, elegantly shot, and has as tight a script as any Carpenter has written. There are some limitations inherent to TV that hold this back from being held in the same esteem as Carpenter's best, but that's about…

    The Director's Series-Part V: John Carpenter

Someone's Watching Me! is a made for television film that was filmed before, but released after Halloween. It follows Leigh Michaels (Lauren Hutton) who recently moves to Los Angeles and begins working as a director for live television news. In her high rise apartment building, she finds herself the recipient of strange & disturbing phone calls and gifts from an older man who is spying on her. Detective Gary Hunt (Charles Cyphers) can't do anything…

Referred as “the lost Carpenter film” for many years, John Carpenter’s Someone’s Watching Me still remains one of his least watched directorial efforts. A made-for-TV horror that delivers more thrills than most horror films of today, the film features a very simple premise & setting but is tense, gripping & suspenseful throughout its runtime.

The story of Someone’s Watching Me follows a woman who moves to Los Angeles to start a new life but is slowly stalked to the brink of madness…

this should be used as an example when we talk about how men can make feminist/female-friendly films. lauren hutton is a tough-as-nails tv director who, after moving to la from nyc (with some kind of ptsd, it seems), gets stalked by an unknown man. hutton basically saves herself, especially when no one will believe her. one of the most feminist things about the film is how carpenter understands how men don't believe women's fears and women's experiences,…

Finally hitting up the few John Carpenter films I've never seen. He actually made a couple of TV movies right after Halloween because apparently Hollywood executives were just as dumb 40 years ago as they are now. Thanks to the fact that it's not only directed by Carpenter, but also written…

    Max Coombes

    Max Coombes ★★★★

The seventies TV format calls for an aloof dryness that Carpenter half-relishes but also tempers: you can spot Carpenter's worst because they're competent enough to be good and also uncaring, and that is not the case at all with Someone's Watching Me!. Neither he nor Lauren Hutton believe that this television thing will lead to anything worthwhile and in fact they are both in a rush in the world of cinema (where their hearts lie), but as workaholics for whom…
