Yellow-tinted foreboding terror with demonic paintings and deranged isolated villagers. A relatively bloodless affair, but a total onslaught of dreadful atmosphere and captivating mystery. Italy's answer to Don't Look Now and The Wicker Man. Also bears the honor of having the freakiest, most unsettling opening to any giallo I've seen.

One can say that I have seen a few gialli in my day, they're often mesmerizing spectacles to admire. Also, more often than not, they're predictable. I hate to spoil anything but in most cases, if there's a priest, he's the killer, if there are 10 red herrings that are all male, the killer is a female, it's just the way of the game, folks.

The House of the Laughing Windows is not a conventional giallo. We, as an audience,…

Daily Horror Scavenger Hunt 3 - September 2018

    21. On September 21, 2012, House at the End of the Street was released. Today we will watch a movie with the word “house” in the title and it cannot be a House movie or sequel.

This was a really good, atmospheric, nightmarish giallo. As a rule, I love movies with an insane artist who goes on a murderous rampage (i.e. The Driller Killer, Color Me Blood Red) because I can totally…

Opting for the rural backdrop rather than cosmopolitan, The House with Laughing Windows lives deliciously within confines of the folk horror milieu, lacking the well documented motifs so commonly attributed to the giallo in favor of an almost suffocating plethora of menacingly unstoppable atmosphere.

Establishing an eeriness from the get go with a highly disturbing opening (among the genre’s best) before throwing us into the fray with dollops of mysterious dread, morbid paintings, deranged townsfolk, terror inducing windows, and diabolical…

This is one seriously dark and disturbing movie and I love it. I actually think this was the very first dvd I rented from Netflix when I originally signed up back in 2006 before streaming was really a thing.

A guy comes to a small village to restore a macabre fresco and gets wrapped up in the secrets behind the painting. Right from the beginning, you know you’re in for a hella dark time with that creepy ass voice talking…

    Kerry Maxwell

    Kerry Maxwell ★★★★½

Richly textured, relatively subdued gothic giallo. Well, as subdued as a folk-horror giallo about an art restorer summoned to repair a fresco by a deranged syphilitic painter who captures his subjects as they are dying, and his incestuous relationship with his equally twisted sisters. With a great creepy slow-burn atmosphere, painterly cinematography, attractive performances, and a wonderfully preposterous finalé, La casa dalle finestre che ridono is an instant favorite.

Day 3, a film featuring Zora Kerova.

Well no wonder, making him paint people on their death beds! When you can see death in someone it's scary.

I remember my mum taking loads of pictures of my dying grandad, so we could keep this image. I had to tell her no.

I loved his girlfriend from the get go. Especially when she revealed unmatching undies, and massive apple catcher knickers.

Creepiest moment is the ending with the priest cackling like a demented lassie.

    Adam Cook

    Adam Cook ★★★★

Stefano, a restorer, is commissioned to repair a fresco in a small rural town in Southern Italy. The painter of the fresco, Legnani, was a famed, and reportedly mad, artist from the town and the residents want to use his art to build up their faltering tourist trade. What Stefano discovers is a town full of secrets and strange village folk (think: The Wicker Man) covering up the true origins of Legnani’s artwork.
