Sebastian Klein’s review published on Letterboxd:
Das schweigende Klassenzimmer is a great movie about bravery, cohesion and moral courage. It is one of the few German films that I can wholeheartedly recommend, a film that you can be proud of.
The story is as simple as it is authentic, so it actually happened. In a school of the GDR, the high school graduation class is in solidarity with the Hungarian popular uprising in the form of a minute's silence. However, this will not be tolerated by the dictatorial regime, investigations will follow and present the students with a difficult choice.
Unlike the Nazi past, the injustice regime of the GDR in Germany has not yet been sufficiently worked up. Das schweigende Klassenzimmer makes an important contribution here. This film shows the viewer how happy one can be to live in a country where one can freely express one's opinion, in which one does not have to fear for his opinion any sanctions.
The actors are fantastic, as is the director. The movie is entertaining, rousing, I've been thrilled from the first to the last second. Das schweigende Klassenzimmer is a film that should really be seen, it makes an important contribution to society and thus stands out from the mass of empty-content films that are only entertaining.
It's a story of true heroes.
