Targets ★★★★½

Practically helping kickstart the era, Bogdanovich’s insanely good debut is the ultimate “new Hollywood” film. Complete with that GTA aesthetic, meta industry criticisms and even a Jack Nicholson cameo.
It marries the styles of old, new and unique just as well as it marries the exploration of violence with the dialogue driven drama.
It all comes together perfectly on a technical and thematic basis and I’m still trying to wrap my head round the complexities of the allegory.
Why many filmmakers at the time even bothered when this exists, it really does and says it all.
