Oh boy, where to begin? Pros: interesting concept, great jump scares, terrifying visuals I’ve never seen before (ahem, demon Jesus?!), strong performances, a speedy momentum. Cons: derivative (too many The Exorcist homages), very familiar story (until its not), uneven stop-start rhythm, and really offensive, i.e. white savior, incompetent Latinos, sexist, sacrilegious, homophobic (an congregation erupts with a joyful standing ovation at hearing gays will go to hell). Since this is religious horror for religious leaning fans obscenely portraying the iconography is risky but fascinating. I’m torn so clearly I’m going to hell, but it will be an absolutely fabulous place, darrhh-ling.
