Now, before Film Twitter grabs their torches and pitchforks, let me explain. Iñárritu may not be a pretentious fraud, but he is sure as hell pretentious, and The Revenant bears all the hallmarks of his pretentiousness. Flashbacks with little meaning, hallucinations that serve no purpose, and pseudo-profound statements that collapse under the slightest amount of scrutiny all pop up frequently here.
