Jerry Downing’s review published on Letterboxd:
Looks like I'm in the minority, but I really liked this film. Batman has been my favorite superhero since I was a kid so maybe I'm a bit more forgiving than others. This is a movie I've been looking forward to since it was announced. Again, I know I'm in the minority, but I'm looking forward to the DC films coming up more than the Marvel ones.
I loved Batman v Superman from the opening of the movie, showing the end of Man of Steel. This time from the ground level, seeing how how it effected Bruce Wayne. I just thought the while movie was exciting. The fight scenes were awesome.
The editing of the movie didn't bother me, the way I see others saying it did. I am curious how a directors cut would play though. I've heard almost 30 minutes was cut out to shorten it. They could have cut out the dream sequences and origin story. The dream sequences didn't add anything and we all know that Bruce's parents were killed when he was a kid.
I never had a problem with Ben Affleck played Bruce/Batman, and I think he did a fine job here. I wasn't a big fan of Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor though. As a villain, I thought he was fine. He didn't feel like Lex to me, though. Same with Jeremy Irons as Alfred. I'm a big fan of his, he just didn't feel like Alfred. I wish they could have gotten Michael Caine. Some connection to the Christopher Nolan Batman universe would have helped.
Reading my review again, it seems like I'm being more negative about things, but I loved it. I'll see how that holds up on repeat viewings.
