    Baby Driver

Edgar Wright moves away from the camera and editing trickery that defined his first four films (though I haven't seen A Fistful of Fingers yet!) into a more atypical summer action film. Tellingly, this feels like the least personal of his films despite a third act that attempts to ramp up the emotional stakes of this heist.
Wright is of course, still a technical master and his command over the camera and editing is always top notch, however "Baby Driver"…

  • Margin Call

    Margin Call

Though it doesn't mine its material for dramatic moments, this quiet film admirably tries to explain the machinations that caused the 2008 financial crisis. And while it also never reaches any profoundly meaningful conclusions of what caused the fallout, it poses an intriguing question: while we can all point out the flaws in modern capitalism which caused the financial system to collapse, when it all comes down, which side of the equation would you rather be on?

This would make for an interesting triple feature with HBO's Too Big to Fail and Inside Job.

    Crazy, Stupid, Love.

One of those rare, surprising films that manage to coast by entirely on the charm of its actors and some smart choices by the writers and directors. On the surface, this is packed with cliche and unbelievable coincidences, but its still rare to get a romantic comedy mixed in with a coming of age and a divorce story simultaneously, and each be pretty interesting on their own.

A solid episode of Scooby Doo... minus the dog and whole lot more rape.
