The once-revolutionary special effects hold up surprisingly well 25 years later (I wonder how much longer that will be true), but the best part of this—and any franchise-starter, really—is how quaint it feels in terms of action.
That’s not to say the set pieces are lacking, because they are in fact pretty amazing, to the last. It is to say, though, that unlike its sequels, especially the World ones, don’t leave quite as much space for thoughtful discussion and character moments amidst all the madness.
