An achievement in direction and effects, for sure, but a truly poor script—and I say that as a fan of the book. Cline shows his cards by removing all of the detail and nuance that made the world he built in his novel so thought-provoking.
The changes, too—and there were SO many changes—didn't exactly solve any of the book's issues, and in some cases maybe muddled them even further. Like, what is this movie trying to say? What is it about? As plainly written as the book was, at least it had a point of view.
