Sorry to Bother You ★★★★

It's stuffed with maybe one too many ideas, as if first-time director Boots Riley thought he might never get to make another movie. If there's any justice, though, he will, because despite A LOT going on in this movie, so much of it is thrillingly fresh, unique and meaningful. I have been obsessed with the cast of Short Term 12 since I saw it, and LaKeith Stanfield continues to impress.

At the SIFF screening I saw, rapper/activist-turned-filmmaker Riley was there and joked that when he wrote the screenplay in 2012, Stanfield was "googling 'how to become an an actor'." It's pretty remarkable, then these two, just six years later, could make such an indelible movie together.
