Loses some of the zaniness of The Muppet Show, but the ramshackle direction plays well with the episodic road movie vibe. Luckily the silliness of the Show remains, alongside the meta jokes, which, nearly 40 years later, feel very contemporary.
The overflowing optimism and good-heartedness of Kermit and his pals, meanwhile, now feels like a dream that remains unrealized. Though it's certainly not the fault of the Muppets, whose songs are wonderful—none more so than the opener, the instant and forever classic "Rainbow Connection".
