Ordinary People

Ordinary People ★★★★½

This movie could have easily been a melodramatic mess full of cliches and manipulative emotional moments. Instead everyone does a marvelous job bringing their characters to life, expertly conveying, hiding, or struggling with their inner emotions.  The mother, father, and son all have their own issues to deal as they struggle to articulate their needs and wants while trying to do what is best for each other.

Despite never personally having such a dramatic catastrophe, small moments reminded me of little interactions I had with my parents as a teenager. An impressive feat to capture such mundane but intimate familial interactions that reflects real life family dynamics.
