The Great Ziegfeld

The Great Ziegfeld ★★★

Despite it being overblown and a least an hour too long, The Great Ziegfeld always keeps your attention. It helps that what it lacks in plot it makes up with a good cast and a couple beautifully shot musical numbers. (A Pretty Girl Is Like A Melody being the most impressive despite the mishandling of the number’s single cut).

William Powell is always fun to follow around even when the film lacks tension, Frank Morgan provides some much needed energy whenever is pops up and Louise Reiner makes the most of her short runtime. The positives tend to outweigh the negatives as long as your a fan of lavish musicals or have the patience to sit through a lot of eye candy.
