Rumble Fish ★★★★½

Gives its raw bleeding heart a grand, heightened stage of balletic "rumbles" and breathtaking chiaroscuro - few films successfully link their aesthetics and emotions when both are working at such intense levels. Some of FFC's best images here but also some of the best images in general, and the moment where we realise the real reason this thing is in black & white, beyond harking back to the days of old Hollywood motorcycle gangs...damn, this is a film that earns every single moment of catharsis and pain.

Mickey Rourke's performance is something magical, a portrayal or inner peace that encases inner torment (or vice versa?), a wisdom that is mistaken by all for madness. And Dillon's opposite energy is perfect - raging, impassioned youth and confidence barely masking fear. Having Dennis Hopper, Tom Waits, Laurence Fishburne and Nicolas Cage show up is the icing on the cake.

Watching The Godfather I'm impressed by the painterly compositions and the sheer grace of the thing as a behemoth of masterful production, but the bonds between the Corleones that hold it all together are simply no match for the brotherly love of this film. Rusty James with his whole future ahead of him, The Motorcycle Boy with his past always hanging over him, both yearning for freedom and finding some fragment of hope in each other.

I can only hope my little brother can learn something from me one day.
