    Ponniyin Selvan: Part I

Do you know why they call me Ponniyin Selvan?

Two of my dreams came true today, first watching a Mani Ratnam film on big screen and second witnessing Kalki's epic come alive. Ratnam always talked about how he wanted to make this in the mirror of novel and still want everyone to see what Ponniyin Selvan means to him through cinema. The mermaid sequence and magical realism done right. The kurosawa fanboy in me and Ratnam both can rest easy…

"you want them to speak out, when the system is not letting them even breath. you're an idealist?"

There's a scene here when our protagonist Bhaskar is reading about the killing of a naxal woman the radio news in the background says that a minister is protesting against cow slaughter. It establishes the priorities of the leaders. This (with several other instances of contrasts) puts into perspective the struggle of human life — and how almost nothing has actually changed. The anger is real, legitimate and just.
