Army of the Dead

Army of the Dead ★★

Weird movie that seems to really lack the Snyder personality. It's a zombie movie that's focused more on the action than the dread; the protagonists are military dudes armed to the teeth who shoot with John Wick-style pinpoint-accuracy. For that alone, this can be a pretty enjoyable and engaging film at parts. So why does the majority of the product feel so dull, generic, and dour?

Some characters are obviously more interesting than others, so Snyder fixes this issue by making every character equally boring and uninteresting, save for Bautista who genuinely appears to care about the craft. He has a really friendly aura with a surprisingly dynamic range of emotions, I hope he grows to become a great leading man in his acting career. The tiger zombie gave a pretty compelling performance too, just wish it had more presence.

I think Snyder is inherently unfunny, except when it's by accident. There's a moment in the really melodramatic opening credits that made me laugh out loud. I don't want to say he's phoning it in, because for better or worse, Snyder almost always forges his vision, but I fear that everything with his family tragedy and the mess of Justice League left with him with an overall defeatist attitude, given this is maybe his most cynical and pessimistic movie to date. It'll be interesting to see where he takes his future next.

Just glad he finally embraced his love for zombie R34
