Most of The Dreamers is stunning but a lot is terrible- but it’s difficult to remember any of the latter now, so this will remain a 4 for me.
Each frame oozes a casual eroticism that’s more brutal than any of the graphic ones could ever be. It’s not pornographic as much as it’s lurid- it’s sex for the sake of defiance, to prove some point that Matthew never completely agrees with.
In this landscape, violence and politics and sex and cinema are almost interchangeable. Each is a form of rebellion.
I’m stuck with the image of Isabelle’s face smeared with blood, the riots, the bubbles in the bathtub…
