“History isn’t kind to men who play God.”
Dear Daniel Craig,
You will always be my James Bond and I’m going to miss watching you be 007. I’m going to miss the James Bond I grew up with.
He wasn’t campy. He wasn’t ‘the perfect man’s man’ as people often made Bond out to be. He is deeply flawed and a broken human being, and you, Mr. Craig, were the makeover he needed to elevate him from mythic legendary status of the MI6’s top secret agent to an in-depth character study, a meditation on masculinity and vulnerability.
James Bond was always cool but with a self-awareness and incredible performance across five movies and 15 years, you made him cool and accessible. Whether ‘twas a film as great as Skyfall or the author of all my pain like Spectre, you, Mr. Craig, have always understood the assignment.
And I’m going to miss watching you. You brought an unprecedented gravitas and pathos to the slick style and swaggering badassery of Bond. You put a name to the number and a man to the name. He’s James. He’s not just 007, and we’re better off for it.
I guess ‘tis time to say goodbye.
In your (not so secret) service,
