It's the battle of the Safdie Brothers versus Robert Pattinson. The pair of directors are out to make you despise the titular Connie Nikas, establishing the character as a familial abuser, a statutory rapist, and all-around selfish criminal lowlife; Robert Pattinson is working his hardest to get you on his side. {Similar to leo in the wolf of wall street,} his performance is so commanding, so powerful, that even though we know him succeeding is the worst possible outcome, we are intensely invested in that very success. The greatest trick the Safdies ever pulled is making us root for Connie and then being gigantically relieved when he fails.
