Siegel™’s review published on Letterboxd:
THE REAL ALIEN INVASION IS ATHEISM
Shyamalan sets every single moment and plot device up so cleanly for such ridiculously perfect payoffs, some hilariously stupid (the water) others infuriating and disgusting (the asthma), that the result is an effectively meaningless experience. It is a unique alien invasion movie as it isn't really about the alien invasion at all - that is just an excuse for the director to profess vain and vapid ideas about the effect of faith on human reaction and the psyche. But don't let its pathetic emptiness fool you, it's still an insultingly surface-level presentation of some incredibly profound philosophies that it refuses to explore to any extent other than the most basic, and then has the gall to pretend it has truly delved into any sort of valuable discourse. I hate this movie more than anything.
