Gone Girl

Gone Girl ★★★★½

Everyone take a deep breath. Are you calm? Good. Now, I want all of you to contain your excitement as I tell you that Gone Girl is one of Fincher's best; a landmark in savagery and untamed beauty. It's hard to put into words, mainly because I couldn't grasp the fact that Fincher has outdone himself in almost every department. Gone Girl is one of the trashiest, craziest, wildest, and insanely deranged films that I have ever seen, and It's one of the best films of the year. Without a doubt.

First off, the technical elements are stunning as always. Jeff Cronenweth's cinematography is lush and gorgeous, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross' soundtrack is chill-inducing and absolutely hair-raising. Kirk Baxter's editing is exemplary in every single aspect, which results in a film that never feels its run-time.

All of those elements contribute to David Fincher's startling and mocking thriller, which is almost too great to put into words. It's fast, it's funny, it's disturbing, it's sleazy, it's ironic, it's blood-curdling; every single feeling that you want from a GREAT film is here in spades. And somehow, David Fincher pulled it off.

However, the incredible tale being woven, brought together by phenomenal performances across the board, is the reason why this film is so touchy and dangerous. Simply put, Rosamund Pike should win a Oscar. I'm not saying more than that, but it's easily the finest performance that I have seen this year. Ben Affleck is tremendous as well, slyly subverting and destabilizing expectations in a way that is revitalized and mesmerizing. Neil Patrick Harris is fantastic, being both tender and freaky. Hell, even Tyler Perry is incredible, showcasing a knack for comedic timing that works SO well on so many levels.

While I kept my review as spoiler-free as I could, I suggest that you run to your nearest movie theatre as see this as soon as humanly possible. It's a gorgeous, impressive, sublime, terrifying, chilling, and utterly haunting film that is easily one of David Fincher's finest and one of the grandest films of the year. And I'm not using hyperbole or exaggeration here; Gone Girl is another masterpiece by one of the greatest directors of all time.

Bow down to a master, and maybe he'll spare you. Maybe.
