Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest ★★★★½

Gore Verbinski unhinged. A back-to-back shooting schedule (with At World's End), an unprecedented Hollywood budget, and a mostly blank canvas allowed this sequel to flourish into a demented theme-park ride extravaganza. Verbinski has said that Disney didn't really have the time to interfere, and the result is a film overloaded with cannibals, sword fights with Keaton-esque physical comedy, a kraken, Davy Jones (with some of the best mo-cap and CGI for the time), and even a few too many characters. Mostly, this is a plodding, bloated film, with uneven pacing and a struggle to maintain its tone, but the delirious heights are unlike anything we've seen before or since in a major tentpole blockbuster.
