Kings Row ★★★½

Almost Lynchian in its depiction of the perversities lying just beneath small-town America, this morbid succession of mutilations, suicides and nervous breakdowns benefits from Warners’ magnificent stable of character actors and an excellent Wolfgang Korngold score. Apart from Ann Sheridan, the leads are too lightweight for the heavy melodrama; surprisingly, though, Sam Wood’s direction effectively milks the old-dark-house and psychological aspects of the script.
