Avid cinephile looking to expand my horizons.
Top 4 are my favorite first-time watches of the past month.
This has to be one of the most fascinatingly strange "mainstream" American thrillers I've ever seen. Fincher's anticlimax is one of the most brilliant sick jokes I've experienced in a film, and it's kind of perfect the longer I sit with it. Weird, cryptic, pulpy, incomplete... Utterly entrancing.
There's something to be said for how comparatively goofy and "pointless" this movie is. Eggers seems to feel relatively unconcerned with deeper meaning (outside of general mythical allusions) and more interested in dicking around with his formal influences, creating an expressionistic pastiche that is simply great fun to sit through. I was pleasantly surprised by how well this held up on a rewatch, with its formally peerless madness still being exhilarating and brutal, while remaining gloriously goofy throughout.
Did I really just watch this twice in the span of 24 hours? You bet your ass I did!
Well, to be fair, the second viewing was with my music-obsessed girlfriend. And I don't regret it one bit, because holy shit this was great. I love being able to feel this exhilarated by a new film, it's something I haven't felt to this extent in a while. Definitely something I know will be pretty consistently in my rewatch cycle from now on. And that soundtrack will be on repeat for a while.
