Some movies are just made for you specifically, you know?

Beyond blown away by this. The Criterion restoration seriously makes it look like it was shot yesterday, some of the most gorgeous black-and-white images I've ever seen. One of the most thematically dense horror films I've seen, a simmering well of paranoia, bottled grief and (most brilliantly) uncomfortable sexual repression. This is clearly what Raimi wanted to do from the start: create a gory, bat-shit crazy modern Warner Bros. cartoon to help invigorate the genre. Turns out he just had to wait 6 years til he had the budget to do it.

Definitely something I know will be pretty consistently in my rewatch cycle from now on. And that soundtrack will be on repeat for a while.

    Hell fucking yeah!

This is pretty much everything I love about modern horror. Extremely layered and real character dynamics, a big old dollop of thematic heft, gorgeous aesthetics, surprising amount of humor, a real understanding of what makes body horror effective... It's all here. Marillier's leading performance is simply outstanding, I felt more for Justine than I have for a horror lead in quite some time. Wonderfully unique, engrossing and layered stuff.

Can't believe it took me so long to…
