Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood

Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood ★★★★★

Both a poetic love letter to a star who the world unfortunately did not get to see more of and also a hysterical comedy. Given the events that inspired the film, it’s shocking how laid back Once Upon a Time in Hollywood feels for most of the film’s runtime. Not only is this Quentin Tarantino’s most restrained effort to date, but it’s also his best from a directorial standpoint and in terms of technical craft (highlights include Robert Richardson’s stellar 35mm cinematography, Fred Raskin’s tight editing, Barbara Ling’s set designs and Arianne Phillips’ costume designs). The entire ensemble is committed in their respective roles, with Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie all possibly giving some of their best performances of their respective careers.

Quite possibly my favorite of Tarantino’s works to date (definitely his best since Inglourious Basterds). Strongly recommend seeing this masterpiece on the biggest screen possible (if you haven’t already).

10/10 - A+
