I’ve waited an age to catch this movie and was pretty overhyped by the time I got to see it. Despite that, Possessor did not disappoint. With an intelligent script and lean structure this film mashes sci-fi and assassination thriller to maximum effect. Any criticism would be that the film just barely touched on the wildness that this environment could allow. I can see a whole world building set of stories built around this premise and Possessor just scratches the surface. Still it’s going to leave a scar.
A disturbing and sordid satire on the collapse of society from British director Ben Wheatley. By turn both hilarious and terrifying, this film, based on the JG Ballard book, makes its point early on but keeps relentlessly taking us into a rapid spiral of decadence and ruin, portraying the human condition within a capitalist framework as essentially irredeemable. Great performances from all with Tom Hiddleston in the lead, and a brilliant art dept which seems to set the film in the early 80s.
Bleak and stylised, this film won't be everyone's cup of tea, but it sure shook my branches.
