"We didn't choose the skux life. The skux life chose us."
I had my fair share of biases with this one- Samuel Neill? awesome! Julian Dennison? Have only seen him from Deadpool, but he looks like he's got a great career ahead of him. References to other movies? Keep 'em coming! Directed by Taika Waititi? Love his works Jojo Rabbit and Thor Ragnarok! All that said, biases lead to larger expectations, and while I didn't know what to expect, I was a bit excited for this one, especially with all the praise I've heard. All this could lead to this being a big disappointment. And I'm pleased to say, this was phenomenal. And its on Hulu for free!
Though we're confined mostly the density of the bush, the ground this film covers is physically and metaphorically expansive. It's an adventure reminiscent of Lord of the Rings- but with no destination. Ironically, it even feels reminiscent of Up from Pixar, almost a to a tee in all It's elements and storytelling. It's a comedy that Waititi is well know for, and I got a laugh out of even the little things.
I smiled, I laughed, I cried and cried again. It was a thrill of an adventure despite being so grounded down to earth and not adding any fantastical elements, and one could even say it's... majestical.
Samuel Neill and Julian Dennison were fantastic in their roles, but really everyone in the cast was. I could tell every one out in their best, and "nature" of the story built on how real they came off as bringing the story to life.
And shoot... that cinematography was incredible!
