Capernaum ★★★★½

The plot might suggest a depressing, uncomfortable film. Sure, but, despite the poverty, despite the cruelty, and despite the vulnerability of the young, the poor, and the dispossessed characters, 'Capernaüm' is also an uplifting film, due entirely to the resilience, the courage, and the loving care shown by the film's remarkable young main character. A thought-provoking and gut-wrenching film that engrossed from beginning to end with Zain Al Rafeea gives one the best child performances ever.
