Yorgos Lanthimos’ most straightforward piece since ‘Dogtooth.’ Overstays its welcome a little bit but everything about ‘The Favourite’ is exquisitely made: A wildly entertaining cynical comedy screenplay from Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara; Phenomenal performances from Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz, Emma Stone (all lead, by the way), and Nicholas Hoult; Sandy Powell’s mesmerizing costume; a never been better work from cinematographer Robbie Ryan; and a music score which blends baroque with the awkwardly modernist.

And, of course, at the very core of the movie, Lanthimos’ brilliant direction. He might dialled back his usual strange, unconventional stories with stiff, mannered style. But that doesn’t mean ‘The Favourite’ strays far from Lanthimosian moves. Every scenes on this movie screams (delightfully) with his familiar eccentric, imaginative moves.

‘The Favourite’ ticks all the boxes for a gloriously good time at the cinemas, delivering in equal spades a raucously entertaining, wickedly witty movie and a marvellous showcase for three talented performers.
