While not everything works swimmingly, Rob Marshall’s live-action reimagining of ‘The Little Mermaid’ features a breathtaking star-making turn from Halle Bailey. Her performance - and her incredible, powerful, soothing voice - keep the movie afloat during its often feels overlong running time.

Boring/lifeless Prince Eric, rough looking visuals under the sea, and Marshall’s shallow direction which often ruined the mood of many of the movie’s scenes. The “Kiss the Girl” scene is such a delight to watch though.
