Petite Maman

Petite Maman

★★★★

Petite Maman is a fantasy drama written and directed by Céline Sciamma (Portrait of the Lady on Fire). The film is told from the perspective of eight-year-old Nelly, who is mourning the death of her maternal grandmother. While venturing into the woods surrounding the house, Nelly comes across Marion, working on building a tree fort. The two quickly develop a friendship and bond with each other in the days leading up to Marion having to leave for an operation.

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

Sam Raimi (The Evil Dead, Spider-Man) takes the reins for the latest film of Phase IV of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and acts as both a direct follow-up to last year’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, as well as the Disney+ series WandaVision. Since it is going to be hard delving into the rest of the film without spoilers, I’m going to summarize my thoughts on the film by saying that I thought that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness…

Firestarter

★★★

Firestarter is a film produced by Blumhouse and directed by Keith Thomas (The Vigil), based on the novel by Stephen King, which was previously adapted in a 1984 film starring a young Drew Barrymore. The backstory is told during the opening credits as college students Andy and Vicky McGee are subject to experiments that give them psychic abilities, with Andy having the power to control people’s thoughts and Vicky having the telekinetic ability to move objects with her mind. The Thief Collector

The Thief Collector

★★★★

The Thief Collector is a true-crime documentary by director Allison Otto, which makes heavy use of reenactments to illustrate the short stories written by Jerry Alter, which appear to be a veiled confession for the real crimes committed with his wife Rita. The theft and recovery of Willem de Kooning’s “Woman-Ochre” is just the start of the story, as the Alters’ family and the police try to piece what part of the stories are true and what is fiction.

Mija

Mija

★★★½

Mija is a documentary by Isabel Castro about two Mexican-American women trying to navigate the music industry, while also being the sole breadwinner for their families. Doris Muñoz and Jacks Haupt bond over the ever-present guilt of being the only documented member of their families, with Jacks, in particular, having a difficult time, due to her parent’s lack of support for her singing career. Doris, on the other hand, is desperate to get green cards for her parents, so they…

Still Working 9 to 5

★★★★

Still Working 9 to 5 is a documentary directed by Camille Hardman and Gary Lane, which is both a retrospective documentary about the film 9 to 5, while also talking about the women’s inequality issues that influenced the film. This includes the fight by women activists for the Equal Right Amendment, which would add women to the American constitution. Today the film 9 to 5 remains relevant, particularly with modern issues such as the #MeToo movement.

My Old School

My Old School

★★★★½

My Old School is a documentary directed by Jono McLeod, who was a student at Bearsden Academy at the time Brandon Lee enrolled in the school. Accompanied by Daria-inspired animated reenactments, the former students and teachers of Bearsden Academy recall Brandon Lee’s time at the school, with actor Alan Cumming, who was once pegged to direct and star in a fictional biopic about Brandon, standing in to lipsync to an audio interview provided by the real Brandon Lee.

Pleistocene Park

Pleistocene Park

★★★★

Pleistocene Park is a documentary by Luke Griswold-Tergis about the titular wildlife preserve that hopes to curb the effects of climate change. At the centre of the documentary is the very eccentric Russian geophysicist Sergey Zimov, who is as much a genius as he is a madman. In contrast, Sergey’s son Nikita is more of a realist, realizing the difficulty of reaching the ultimate ecosystem-changing goal of Pleistocene Park.

The story that develops over the course of Pleistocene Park is…
