Hooptober X #5/31
A mystery/thriller/teen drama with a sprinkling of slasher. Flawed but still pretty fun, and such a powerful dose of the 90s.

This film is a slog at times* but it builds up to a thrilling half hour at the end. Does a great job of presenting these slow but relentless creatures, and conveying a sense of mystery behind their sudden appearance. It gets pretty intense when there's a horde inside banging at the door.
* I made the mistake of watching a colourised version which was inconsistent and simply looked crap. Need to rewatch this in black-and-white.

(film based on a Clive Barker story)
Jesus wept…
A taste of hell, with unsettling atmosphere and just the right amount of lurid gore. The practical effects were great. It's a bit silly in an 80s way, but that's what I came for.

Loved the spooky set design in the tower. The rocky "outdoor" scenes, not so much (at one point I got distracted from the action by what looked like creases in the fabric of the sky).
I didn't care much for the final scene with the baron (ABAB), but the Monster's story was entertaining, and sad too. It went some places I didn't expect. Worth a watch.
