One significant bit I'm sure many non-Mandarin speakers will miss. Near the end, the two now older principals say goodnight to each other, and then repeat it, more than once. One of the characters earlier in the movie provided the explanation of the word goodnight's significance, though it really doesn't make sense if you don't know the Mandarin.
