Dirty Harry ★★★★

Thoroughly entertaining cop v serial killer thriller with some nifty dialogue including, of course, that classic speech about the Magnum .44's barrel capacity. Clint Eastwood's no great shakes in the acting department, but he plays it suitably cool in the title role of a cold-hearted, mean-spirited San Francisco police inspector, while Andrew Robinson is chillingly odd as Scorpio, the psycho murderer-cum-extortionist. It remains exciting throughout, despite some unfortunate plot holes: would the SFPD really send a cop out on his own to pay off an unknown, unpredictable criminal?; and how does Harry become such a great shot in the final moments when he's missed so many times during the rest of the film? Don Siegel's direction is mostly nicely understated, though there is that amazing pull-back from the football pitch....
