It's still a mess, but what a gorgeous mess it is! Production design is marvelous, Armie Hammer shines, Depp and his bird seems less annoying and they even managed to keep lots of Verbinski-specific little details. Shame that they didn't go all the way with werewolf sub-plot, but oh well.
