Germany Year Zero

Perhaps almost as suffering as the war itself, is the period immediately after it; of reconstruction amidst the misery and morale of a people destroyed like the whole country. And this point Rossellini managed to express masterfully, from a very interesting point of view.

the film does not properly prepare us for its outcome - what remains is a scare, an anguish, Rosselini's neorealist tragedy can be summed up in a single sentence: "the weight of the world on such small shoulders."
