Last year I finally watched Jennifer Kent’s debut film, The Babadook. It was an expertly crafted horror film about grief and parenthood that was unsettlingly chilling yet emotively moving. Catching up on Bong’s filmography before I see Parasite in February. This was right up my street with its seamless genre blend of thriller and dark comedy. Really enjoyed revisiting Johnson’s work before I go see Knives Out this weekend. His debut shares the same indie scrappiness as Sean Baker’s Tangerine and Aronofsky’s Pi. It is really cool and somewhat of a stroke of genius as to how well noir tropes fit in with a high school setting. Really brings out youthful themes to the forefront. The kind of genre amplifying human themes that I live for.
