Sonny Bunch’s review published on Letterboxd:
Grade A male weepie! It basically hits all the marks: dead kid, sports-as-redemption, broken down Dude trying to get it together.
I have to say, the people who say this is merely paint by numbers ... I wonder if they watched the last 40 minutes or so. Because, as we see, it’s NOT actually a sports-as-redemption movie. Sports can’t redeem Ben Affleck. The only thing that can redeem Ben Affleck is family and accepting a higher power.
Anyway, Gavin O’Connor (WARRIOR, MIRACLE, THE ACCOUNTANT) is great. Ben Affleck really sells it in the way that Damon and Bale sell FvF: it’s a great Star-driven movie with a great star. Highly recommend!
