    There is an honest and empathetic film this year with a leading male performance that is sensitive, true, and unburdened by a dated, heavy-handed script. The performances from the cast are delicately calibrated. The film beautifully depicts a complicated father’s realization that he maybe should’ve done things differently. When we reach that beautiful ending, our director has earned the emotional catharsis. That film is not called The Whale. It is called Aftersun.
