Escape from New York

Escape from New York ★★★

I love New York, you can put a camera anywhere and it automatically becomes a movie set. We've seen so much of it, clearly, it tops the list of Hollywood's favorite locations to shoot. But, Escape from New York is actually shot in St. Louis.

Set in a dystopian era, where Manhattan is turned into a penitentiary for the most dangerous criminals sentenced to life. It's highly guarded and mined. It's a different New York with dilapidated buildings and roads with crazies and junkies running amok. Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell) is tasked to rescue the president from a terrorist gang.

Rusell is fighting for his life and searching for the president. A deep, strong, masculine voice, the eye patch, and demeanor with sheer arrogance, Snake Plissken is a cultural icon. Russell played the character with panache. Even with a 99-minute runtime, I felt a few scenes were shoehorned just to add a few minutes. The visual effects are impressive considering this was made in 1981. The production design is great. It deserves a watch.
