I am nothing if not a Molly Ringwald completist. I found the lead casting quite refreshing, and I liked the emphasis on a boy-girl friendship, but I am baffled by how this film flirts with domestic abuse. Of course scripts are often filled with clumsy shorthand, where getting into fights is a sign of masculinity or high school struggles for power, but when a teenage boy is this easily triggered into outbursts of violence and dominance, it sends alarm bells ringing. I can't think of very many teen films where there's not at least one punch thrown, but here Noah's temper is so central to the story, and there are so many instances of him completely losing his shit, it throws the film off-balance into uncomfortable territory. I am of course now at least double the target audience's age, and I hate to be a killjoy, but teenagers should know this kind of aggression is not something to aspire to.
