Overwhelming is a word that I've seen used a lot to describe this movie, and it's very fitting. Overwhelmingly beautiful. Every facet of the film fits together perfectly (except one weird edit towards the end).

It's...very cathartic to begin your day by bawling your eyes out for two-and-a-half hours.

I feel like recently, whenever a movie gets made about movies, generally people are like "oh look, another director trying to jerk off Hollywood for awards season, snooze, pass, blah blah blah."

But here is a movie that's like "I love movies, this is why I love movies, I hope that since you presumably love movies as well, you'll love this movie." Simple, emotional, evocative, genuine.

I was the highest I’ve ever been when I watched this, and though I can contribute a lot of my enjoyment of this movie to that fact, it was funnier than I thought it was going to be.

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

There was a moment when Taylor begins to finally understand that she and her crew are about to partake and bear witness to a brutal mass murder, and I was so caught up in the story and the mundanity of how Leslie has planned out this event that I was like "GODDAMMIT YOU FUCKERS ARE ABOUT TO RUIN HIS LIFE'S WORK!" and then I had to take a good hard look at myself.

I watch this every year, and every year, when it gets to Miss Jessica's psychedelic "I'm gonna be me" song, I'm like "wtf, I don't remember this at ALL."

Film School Drop Outs, Week 2: Gloria Swanson

Gloria Swanson is a terrifyingly good actress.

Billy Wilder's use of actors and directors playing themselves as a way to comment on the filmmaking practices of the day, and the transition from silent films to talkies, was a stroke of genius (poor Buster Keaton looked absolutely fucking miserable, although that might have been cause he was losing [?] at bridge).

Max von Stroheim might be one of my favorite actors of all time, despite the fact that I've only seen him in this and Grand Illusion.

What a final scene. Heartbreaking and glorious and sad.
