A shame that Jai White is completely working in the shadow of Ving Rhames here, he's a much less captivating presence and it certainly doesn't help that opposite him is Scott Adkins doing the most insane physicality that's humanly possible. It could do with taking some of the style from the original to help this from feeling less flat but this is otherwise the less interesting, more consistent sequel that you'd expect.
Kosinski has always had a tight hold on his visuals, but his rigid formalism only allows for so much, both Tron Legacy and Oblivion buckled under the weight of his poor storytelling skills. Top Gun Maverick isn't a dud at all but I can't say that my time with it was what I was hoping for.
Outside of the very well crafted action scenes you'd be hard pressed to find anything that rings true here. It's a poor script but Kosinski makes anything not resembling an action scene dull.
Admittedly I have a rather unrefined knowledge of cinema but I feel completely confident in saying that there was nobody else quite like Tarkovsky in every regard, of course you can make superficial comparisons of his visual style to people like Tarr or Angelopoulos but his way of thinking and approach to humanity and their mindsets seems so wholly one of a kind that you can't help but appreciate every single second of his films.
